Nannette Brodie Dance Theatre, a modern dance company of drama, wit, joy and invention capable of moving everyone in their audience, presented their first performance in 1986. The company has performed on a continual basis for the last eighteen years.
Nannette Brodie is the artistic director and principal choreographer for the company. According to Nannette, “Dance should be a celebration, an exploration of ourselves and our environment, of our culture and our world.” NBDT has given performances for over 275,000 people both within the Southern California area and by touring nationally and internationally, averaging 15 to 25 performances a year.
They have received support from the Public Corporation for the Arts, Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, L.A. County Board of Supervisors, California Council for the Humanities, Kaiser Permanente, Pacific Life Foundation, Kiewit Corporation, the Boeing Company, Orange County Community Foundation, Dwight Stuart
Foundation, and James A. Doolittle Foundation. The organization has received educational outreach grants from the Josephine Gumbiner Foundation from 1995-00 to present programs in the schools in Long Beach. The William Gillespie Foundation has awarded two grants to NBDT to develop international touring and to support their concerts in Southern California. The Public Corporation for the Arts of Long Beach has awarded seven operating grants, which have supported concert seasons, administrative development, marketing and school residencies. Support for the current year is from the PCA, L.A. Arts Commission, James A. Doolittle Foundation, Dwight Stuart Foundation, the Orange County Community Foundation and private donors.
In November of 2002, NBDT celebrated their 15th anniversary in concert at Cal-State University Long Beach. In 2003-04, NBDT presented performances in Nevada and Utah as well as showcasing for the Western Arts Alliance Booking Conference in Long Beach and for the Association for Performing Arts Presenters in New York.
On June 5th of 2004, NBDT performed with music ensemble, Enoch Train, at the Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood in their evening work entitled, HeartlandThe Immigrant Experience. This production is currently available for booking. During March and April of 2006, NBDT performed with Enoch Train musicians in All Things Irish at the Madrid Theater in Canoga Park and in HEARTLAND at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Center. During the summer of 2006 NBDT performed their work in the Dance in the Desert Festival in Las Vegas and presented HEARTLAND in Salt Lake City, Utah with the folk band, Caboose. NBDT is celebrating their 20th Anniversary in December of 2007.
